## Challenge

The City of Brantford required a stormwater management solution to support the development of the Southwest Community Park, a major recreational addition. The site posed several engineering and environmental challenges. Located in the D’Aubigny Creek sub-watershed, the area had high groundwater levels and silty clay soils that compromised subgrade stability. These conditions were further complicated by inclement weather during construction, making water management and dry working conditions difficult to maintain.

Additionally, the project needed to accommodate large diameter concrete pipe connections (900mm and 1200mm), which exceeded the height of the proposed system. This required custom structural design to ensure proper hydraulic performance and spatial fit. The installation site was also constrained by its location beneath a cricket pitch, adjacent to a school, library, and community centre. This project demanded a solution that could be integrated seamlessly into a public recreational space without compromising functionality or safety.

The original specified system was reconsidered due to cost and technical limitations, prompting the need for a more adaptable and value-driven alternative.

## Titan Solution

Titan Environmental delivered a tailored subsurface stormwater solution using its
StormSmart™ Tank system. From planning through post-construction, Titan played a central role in overcoming site-specific constraints and ensuring the system met all the functional requirements. ![StormSmart Tank_Brantford_ON_July2025 (2)](https://casestudies.titanenviro.com/hs-fs/hubfs/StormSmart%20Tank_Brantford_ON_July2025%20(2).jpg?width=400&height=267&name=StormSmart%20Tank_Brantford_ON_July2025%20(2).jpg)

To address the oversized pipe connections, Titan engineered custom precast structures with round and rectangular orifices that matched hydraulic flow requirements and spatial constraints.

Additionally, Titan worked closely with geotechnical engineers to sub-excavate the tank footprint by three inches and replace it with 19 mm crushed stone, enhancing bearing capacity and providing a stable subgrade. A sump filled with clear stone and equipped with a buried pump was installed in the low corner of the footprint to actively manage groundwater throughout installation. Titan also oversaw the installation of a three-layer liner system—TE-8 non-woven geotextile, 40mil LLDPE liner, and another layer of TE-8—to ensure impermeability and long-term performance.

These could be concealed beneath the turf of the cricket pitch, allowing for future cleanout without disrupting surface use. Throughout construction, Titan provided on-site technical support, quality control, and troubleshooting to keep the project on track and ensure compliance with manufacturer guidelines.

> [StormSmart™ ](https://titanenviro.com/products/stormwater-management/stormsmart/?hsLang=en)is a modular underground system designed for stormwater infiltration, retention, and detention with high load capacity and minimal footprint. Its efficient design reduces installation materials and costs while integrating seamlessly beneath urban infrastructure.

Titan successfully delivered a custom-engineered stormwater management system that supported the development of Brantford’s Southwest Community Park. The StormSmart™ system provided the necessary storage capacity and met the factor of safety for uplift pressure, even under challenging groundwater conditions. By replacing a conventional surface pond with a subsurface solution, the project preserved valuable recreational space.

The system’s HS-25 load rating ensured structural integrity for both recreational and vehicular use, while the concealed inspection ports allowed for easy maintenance without compromising aesthetics or functionality. Titan’s solution also helped the client reduce overall project costs while ensuring long-term performance and resilience.

Beyond engineering success, the project contributed to community well-being by enabling the construction of inclusive, year-round recreational amenities.
