Challenge
The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) demonstrates its dedication to enhancing its relationship with Indigenous peoples and creating an inclusive space by constructing the Indigenous House.
As part of this initiative, constructing an auditorium was recognized as a key step in fulfilling this commitment. To achieve this, the auditorium was built below ground level, requiring a retaining structure designed with sustainability in mind.
This structure incorporates a mechanically stabilized wall, which effectively retains and shapes the soil slopes while minimizing environmental impact.
Titan Solution
The facilities presented unique challenges due to the surrounding ravine and gradual slope of the land, making attention to structural integrity essential.
Titan Earth Wall™ – Stoney system was selected for the project. Titan supported the engineering team with the MSE design and materials to meet project needs.
Galvanized wire forms created the MSE structure's face, while Titan TE-6, a 6oz non-woven geotextile, was added to prevent reinforced fill from escaping. Behind the wall, the Titan Pyramid Grid™ – UX geogrid reinforced the soil structure.
The Titan Earth Wall® – Stoney is a permanent, stone-faced MSE wall system designed for heights up to 30m, offering a 75–100 year lifespan, ease of construction, and the ability to accommodate settlement.
Achievement
Titan's Engineering Team, which specializes in Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) and Retained Soil Systems (RSS), worked closely with the contractor to help design the 60° Titan Earth Wall ™- Stoney.
Showcasing Titan's expertise as a global geosynthetic leader, this system provides a durable, long-lasting solution with a design life of 75 to 100 years (subject to conditions). This versatile system is notable for accommodating settlement, facilitating construction, and ensuring cost efficiency.
