Fire Water Pond - Multi-layer Geosynthetic Lining System

Mount Carmel Fire Pond (1)

Industry

Civil Infrastructure

Challenge:

A firewater pond was required for a new Spirituality Centre to provide an accessible water source for wildfire prevention and emergency response.

Achievement:

The client was pleased with the durable firewater pond liner system we delivered and the on-time, high-quality installation by our team.

Product Used:

HDPE Geomembrane Liner, Nonwoven Geotextile, Geocomposite

Location:  Edmonton, Alberta

Project Type:  Product Supply & Installation

Product Used:  80 mil SST HDPE, non-geotextile, geocomposite

Challenge

A new Spirituality Centre was being built and as a precaution against wildfires, a firewater pond was required. Fire ponds are needed for water containment, providing fire response teams with an easily accessible source of water to fill fire trucks used to extinguish and prevent the spread of wildfires in the area.

Titan Solution

Mount Carmel Fire Pond (4)

Our design and technical team provided the developer with several viable options for the fire pond design. Given the importance of ensuring that the fire pond was leakproof, the client ultimately chose the most robust design, which included a double-layer geomembrane system with geocomposite in between. We provided just over 40,041 SF (3,720 m2) of single-sided textured HDPE geomembrane and approximately 20,027 SF (1,860 m2) of geocomposite and geotextile materials each. We also provided Acoustic Testing as an additional leak detection precaution measure.

Technical Highlights

Acoustic Testing involves welding the two layers of liner together along the perimeter of the anchor trench and using specialized wands to detect any leaks. This testing allows leaks to be repaired and ensures that the liner is fully sealed. As an extra precaution, the client chose to include acoustic testing to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the firewater pond.

HDPE geomembrane liners are the industry’s top choice for lining projects due to their superior strength, solvent resistance, UV durability, and cost-effective performance—even in high-temperature applications.

Achievement

The client was happy with the durable firewater pond liner system we designed and trusted that we had given them the optimal solution. All materials were delivered on schedule; our team completed the installation with high-quality results within the desired timeframe.

Client Testimonial:

“Thank you very much, Titan. I was on site for the past two days and checked out the liner installation myself. I must say I am very satisfied with the robust system we had you price and install. It looks great and understand that this, along with the testing will provide us with one of the best pond liner systems available. Much appreciated, Developer”.
