Challenge:
A pedestrian overpass in Colwood, BC required six interconnected retaining walls with unique geometry to carry the Galloping Goose Regional Trail over Sooke Road — and needed to blend naturally into the trail rather than look hard-engineered.

Challenge
The Galloping Goose Pedestrian Overpass carries the Galloping Goose Regional Trail over Sooke Road in Colwood, BC, for the Capital Regional District (CRD). The bridge approach embankments required a complex geometry, featuring three interconnected retaining walls on each side, each with unique reinforcement and embedment requirements.
Titan worked closely with partnered geotechnical consultant Braun Geotechnical, the site contractor, Surespan, and the CRD's engineering team throughout the design process to coordinate the solution. The finished walls also needed to blend seamlessly with one of the region's busiest recreational trails rather than appear as a hard-engineered structure.
Titan Solution
Titan specified two MSE/RSS systems to match the varying conditions across the six interconnected walls: Titan Earth Slope® – Veggie, a welded-wire RSS system for vegetated slopes up to 70° batter, and Titan Earth Wall® – Stoney, a galvanized wire-basket MSE system rated for faces up to 90°. Using both systems side by side allowed the design to transition between slope and wall conditions as the bridge approach geometry required.

Both systems are a flexible MSE option that provides a natural aesthetic, helping the structure blend naturally with the surrounding trail. Construction ran from late fall 2025 through April 2026 and marked Surespan's first self-performed wire-basket MSE installation in years. Throughout the project, Titan provided pre-construction guidance, on-site technical support, and engineered the integration of a light pole foundation directly into the wall structure.
Titan Earth Slope® MSE systems are flexible and durable, providing a cost-effective solution for constructing slopes with a batter up to 70 degrees.
Achievement
The completed overpass provides cyclists, pedestrians, and runners with a safe, uninterrupted connection across Sooke Road, removing an at-grade crossing along one of the region's busiest active transportation corridors. By combining vegetated and stone-faced retaining wall systems, the finished structure supports the bridge approach while blending naturally with the surrounding trail environment.
Working in close collaboration with the project team, Titan delivered a flexible retaining wall solution tailored to the site's complex geometry, integrating six interconnected retaining walls, two complementary MSE/RSS systems, and a light pole foundation into a cohesive design.
