Asphalt Road Reconstruction/Improvement

TE-FGP 10 Portage Completed overlay on Peony Bay North Street-

Industry

Civil Infrastructure

Challenge:

The existing asphalt surface in Portage la Prairie was deteriorating thus leading to instability and reduced road performance.

Achievement:

By incorporating Spartan Road Grid™, the road was reinforced to delay cracking, extend service life, and improve performance—showing no signs of fatigue or cracking one year after construction.

Product Used:

Spartan Road Grid™

Location: Portage la Prairie, Manitoba

Project Type: Product Supply & Technical Guidance

Product Used: Spartan Road Grid™

Challenge

The challenge was the existing asphalt wearing surface aging and cracking, in addition with a high water table with a weak saturated sub-grade led to instability of the base that effected the overall performance (lengthwise and transverse cracks) of the road. The work was done over the summer during peak traffic hours. With a good weather forecast and above average temperatures, we were able to start work at 6 am before traffic started.

Titan Solution

Portage FGP10 Site grid placed in tack before paving, Cresent RD- E-

Titan provided a longer term solution using Spartan Road Grid™  to delay cracking and extend the service life of the road. First the reflective cracks were repainted, then a 20mm overlay, working course was applied over the existing surface. Afterwards pure SS1 tack was sprayed at the specified application rate. Once cured the Spartan Road Grid™ was applied over top then overlaid with a 100mm asphalt layer.

Spartan Road Grid™ is a fiberglass composite geogrid bonded to a nonwoven geotextile, specifically engineered for asphalt reinforcement, offering enhanced tensile strength, moisture resistance, and long-term pavement durability.

Achievement

The use of Spartan Road Grid™ 10 in the Portage la Prairie road reconstruction project resulted in a significant improvement in pavement performance. By reinforcing the asphalt layers, the geogrid effectively delayed the onset of reflective and fatigue cracking, even under challenging conditions like a high water table and weak sub-grade. One year after installation, the roads showed no signs of cracking or structural fatigue, demonstrating the system’s ability to extend service life, reduce maintenance needs, and enhance overall road durability.
