Stormwater Management Case Study | Rustic Drive

StormSmart™ Stormwater Modules

Industry

Water Management

Challenge

Roadside ditches along Rustic Drive and Old Abbey Road required ongoing maintenance and could experience debris buildup and blocked culverts. The City of Waterloo needed a more functional stormwater solution that improved accessibility and made better use of available space.

Results

Titan’s StormSmart™ system replaced roadside ditches with underground modular infiltration tanks. The solution supports groundwater recharge, helps reduce surface runoff and pollutant discharge, and maximizes usable street space.

Key Product

BaseLok™ Geocell, StormSmart™

Location: City of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Project Type: Municipal Infrastructure

Product Used: StormSmart™ Stormwater Modules + BaseLok® GeoCell

Challenge

Along Rustic Drive and Old Abbey Road in Waterloo, Ontario, the residential neighbourhood relied on roadside ditches to manage peak stormwater runoff. These ditches required ongoing homeowner maintenance and could collect debris or experience blocked culverts.

challenge

They also created steep banks that made access and property maintenance more difficult, while runoff could carry pollutants toward natural waterways.

As part of its municipal green infrastructure work and Stormwater Management Master Plan, the City of Waterloo looked to replace the conventional ditches with a more functional stormwater management solution that would improve accessibility and make better use of available space.

Titan Solutions

Titan provided the low-impact development (LID) design, supplied StormSmart™ stormwater tank materials and BaseLok® GeoCell, and delivered on-site technical support throughout installation. The StormSmart™ Tank system replaced conventional roadside ditches with underground modular infiltration tanks, providing a more functional approach to neighbourhood stormwater management.

Solution

Each installation was customized to the site conditions and design requirements, with careful consideration given to module layout, positioning, and integration with the surrounding LID infrastructure.

The tanks were designed to manage minimum storm events while accommodating temporary vehicle loading at the surface, helping maximize usable street space without compromising stormwater management performance.

The Results

resultThe StormSmart™ LID system supports groundwater recharge by promoting stormwater infiltration, helping replenish groundwater supplies while reducing surface runoff. The system also helps mitigate erosion and limit pollutant discharge into natural waterways, supporting the City of Waterloo’s broader green infrastructure and stormwater management objectives. By managing runoff at its source and maximizing usable street space, the project delivers a more sustainable approach to neighbourhood stormwater management.
