Industry

Mining

Challenge:

Shotcrete was initially considered for tunnel lining but was deemed unsuitable due to excessive dust and dirt production, which would have compromised ventilation and working conditions.

Achievement:

Concrete Canvas was successfully installed in four tunnel sections with minimal labor, cleaner conditions, and high client satisfaction due to its ease of use and rapid deployment.

Product Used:

Concrete Canvas®

Location: Eastern Canada

Project Type: Product Supply & Installation

Product Used: Concrete Canvas® CC6

Challenge

Shotcrete was initially considered for lining the underground tunnel but was rejected due to the excessive dirt and dust it generated, which would have negatively impacted ventilation and working conditions. The tunnel environment required a cleaner, less labor-intensive solution that could be installed efficiently in confined underground conditions.

The Titan Solution

Concrete Canvas (CC) was selected and installed by Sanclara Corporation in collaboration with Moran Mining. The installation involved scaling tunnel surfaces to remove debris, hydrating CC strips in water tanks, and securing them to galvanized screens with industrial cable ties and rock bolts. Additional hydration was provided during installation using drill water. The process was executed by a crew of three over an average of 2.5 shifts per section, with each shift lasting 12 hours.

Concrete Canvas® (CC) is a Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM), a factory-produced material combining cement within geosynthetic layers that hardens when hydrated for erosion control and weed suppression.

Achievement

The use of Concrete Canvas resulted in a cleaner, faster, and more efficient installation compared to Shotcrete. The crew reported improved working conditions, and the client was highly satisfied with the ease of installation, minimal disruption to ventilation, and rapid material supply.
