BGM - Tailings Pond

With Stage 1 of the TMF Tailings Dam nearing capacity, a vertical extension was essential to sustain ongoing and future mining operations. The Stage 2 dam raise involved three work fronts—upstream, downstream, and spillway—and required integrating a new geomembrane with the Stage 1 liner to maintain a seamless containment system. Key challenges included ensuring worker safety on steep slopes near hazardous tailings and protecting the environment from potential leakage.

Titan Solution

Titan supplied and installed 35 rolls of Coletanche® ES2 BGM and 39 rolls of TE-10 GTX to complete the project. These materials were used to tie into the existing Stage 1 geomembrane while raising the dam. Titan's expertise ensured precise installations on all work fronts and effective safety protocols, equipping workers with fall arrest systems and life jackets to address the steep slopes.

Bituminous geomembrane, known as BGM liner, is a specialty geomembrane with composite layers that make it stronger, more watertight, and more durable than resin-based geomembranes.

The project was completed on schedule, extending the dam’s capacity to manage tailings until 2026. This robust containment solution protects the surrounding environment while supporting ongoing mining operations.
